Seoul defense chief accuses Russia of using North Korean weapons in Ukraine attack

South Korean Defense Minister Shin Won-sik stated at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that there is mounting evidence indicating that Russia obtained weapons from North Korea to use in its conflict with Ukraine, in violation of UN Security Council resolutions. He condemned Russia's reliance on North Korean weapons as a betrayal against the international community, warning that this trade not only exacerbates tensions on the Korean Peninsula but also affects the situation in Europe. He emphasized that North Korea's nuclear and missile capabilities pose a grave threat to global security, urging strong condemnation and enforcement of UN Security Council resolutions by all countries. Additionally, Minister Shin Won-sik mentioned that North Korea and Russia are believed to have engaged in significant arms and goods trade, which includes potential exchange of military reconnaissance satellite technology. He expressed concern over the deepening cooperation between North Korea, Russia, and China and called for China to play a more proactive role in stabilizing and denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula. When asked about South Korea's restrictions on supplying weapons to Ukraine, he explained that domestic laws prohibit weapon exports to conflict zones and that any changes would require consensus in the public and National Assembly. He declined to comment on the potential implications of former US President Donald Trump winning a second term.
