SK chief claims 'flagrant error' in divorce settlement ruling

SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won has publicly apologized for causing public concern with his high-profile divorce settlement, but has also announced his intention to appeal the ruling to the Supreme Court due to what he claims is a "flagrant error" in the court's decision. The Seoul High Court had previously ruled in favor of Chey's estranged wife, ordering him to pay a record-breaking 1.38 trillion won in property division and 2 billion won in alimony. Chey expressed his regret for the worries his personal affairs have caused and emphasized that while he respects the court's ruling, he believes it contains a significant error in the property division that he must address through the appeal process. Chey's legal team, led by attorney Lee Dong-keun, argued that the appeals court had miscalculated and overrated Chey's contributions to the growth of SK Group, leading to an erroneous outcome in the property division ratio. Additionally, Chey refuted the court's ruling that SK Group had grown on slush funds provided by his ex-wife's late father, the former president, and assured that the company is capable of preventing any potential hostile takeover or hedge fund activism campaign. Chey's team also denied the existence of any slush fund and contended that the company had actually been disadvantaged due to Chey's familial ties to the former president.
