Unionized workers of Samsung Electronics set to stage walkout over wages

The largest union within Samsung Electronics, the Nationwide Samsung Electronics Union, announced plans to go on strike for the first time due to stalled wage negotiations. The union, consisting of about 28,000 members, intended to stage a one-day walkout on a weekday, aiming to apply pressure on the company to address their wage concerns. Despite the union's decision to not disclose the exact number of workers participating, market analysts predicted that the strike would have minimal impact on Samsung's production, given the high level of automation in its semiconductor fabs. The National Samsung Electronics Union's move to initiate a one-day leave was viewed as a strategic step toward a larger-scale strike, with the union's deputy chief, Lee Hyun-guk, emphasizing the coordinated use of vacation as part of their overall strategy. Market researchers projected that the walkout would not significantly disrupt Samsung's operations, considering the timing of the strike and the automation levels in the company's semiconductor facilities.
