Yoon condemns NK-Russia pact as 'step back in history'

President Yoon Suk Yeol criticized the recent pact between North Korea and Russia in a televised speech marking the 74th anniversary of the Korean War. He described the pact as an outdated and contradictory act that violates UN Security Council resolutions aimed at containing North Korea through sanctions. He also condemned Pyongyang's provocative actions and its alleged development of nuclear weapons capable of reaching the United States. In response to the pact, Yoon's office discussed potential measures, including reconsidering arms support to Ukraine, at a National Security Council meeting. South Korea's national security adviser also announced plans to impose sanctions on vessels, organizations, and individuals involved in illicit exchanges between North Korea and Russia. Yoon emphasized the South Korean government's commitment to preventing a repeat of the tragedy caused by the Korean War and ensuring the safety, freedom, and democracy of its citizens. Additionally, he honored the fallen heroes of the war and highlighted South Korea's remarkable economic progress in the seven decades since the conflict. The president's speech in Daegu, outside of Seoul, marked the first time the Korean War commemoration ceremony was held outside the capital. As a city that played a key role in defending against North Korea's invasion, Yoon pledged to foster an environment where war veterans are respected.
