Yoon meets leaders of Tanzania, Ethiopia ahead of Korea-Africa Summit

President Yoon Suk Yeol engaged in bilateral talks with Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali on the sidelines of the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit in Seoul. The meetings were described as a crucial step for South Korea to enhance strategic cooperation with the African continent amidst global challenges. Discussions with Tanzania included the initiation of talks on an Economic Partnership Agreement and South Korea's commitment of $2.5 billion to support Tanzania's development. Meanwhile, talks with Ethiopia covered the signing of the Trade and Investment Promotion Framework, South Korea's $1 billion commitment through the Korea Economic Development Cooperation Fund, and cooperation in various development projects. In addition to these discussions, President Yoon also held formal talks with Sierra Leone's President Julius Maada Bio to explore avenues for enhancing bilateral relations and supporting Sierra Leone's growth in areas such as the economy, agriculture, and education. Both leaders also discussed coordinating as nonpermanent members of the United Nations Security Council, particularly in addressing issues related to North Korea and human rights. The upcoming Korea-Africa Summit is expected to be the largest multilateral meeting hosted by President Yoon, with 48 African countries sending delegations to Seoul for the event. Special traffic measures will be implemented in Seoul and neighboring Gyeonggi Province during the summit period to reduce congestion.
