Assembly committee to hold hearings on petition to impeach Yoon

President Yoon Suk Yeol and first lady Kim Keon Hee greeted overseas Koreans in Honolulu, Hawaii. The National Assembly's Legislation and Judiciary Committee has approved holding two rounds of hearings later this month to address an online petition calling for President Yoon's impeachment. As part of the proceedings, Kim Keon Hee, the first lady, will be summoned to testify, marking the first time in modern Korean history that a first lady has been called as a witness. The ruling party's lawmakers protested the decision, which was made in response to allegations against Kim, including a luxury gift acceptance and involvement in stock price manipulation. The online petition had garnered over 1.3 million signatures by Tuesday, meeting the requirement for legislative action. During their visit to Honolulu, Hawaii, the first lady, Kim Keon Hee, accompanied President Yoon Suk Yeol. The Legislation and Judiciary Committee of the National Assembly has summoned Kim, along with 38 others, to provide testimony later in July. Witnesses refusing to attend the hearing without valid reasons may face imprisonment or fines. The Presidential office has not yet commented on the developments. President Yoon's visit to the United States includes stops at the US Indo-Pacific Command in Honolulu and attendance at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization meeting in Washington.
