Cabinet again passes motion requesting reconsideration of bill on special probe into Marine's death

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo led a Cabinet meeting in Seoul, where the Cabinet once again approved a motion urging the National Assembly to reconsider a bill that calls for a special counsel investigation into the military's handling of the death of Cpl. Chae Su-geun. The bill alleges inappropriate interference by the presidential office and defense ministry in the military's investigation into the marine's death during a search mission in July 2023. If President Yoon Suk Yeol endorses the motion, the bill will be sent back to the National Assembly, marking an escalation in the months-long standoff between rival parties over the controversial legislation. The bill was introduced by the main opposition Democratic Party after the new National Assembly took office in late May and was pushed through a plenary session despite strong opposition from the ruling People Power Party. The ruling bloc has opposed the bill, arguing that it should wait for the results of an ongoing investigation by the police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials.
