High-ranking NK defector being considered for vice-ministerial post: report

Tae Yong-ho, a former high-ranking North Korean official who defected to South Korea and later became a lawmaker for the conservative ruling People Power Party, is being considered for the position of secretary-general of the presidential Peaceful Unification Advisory Council's Secretariat. This potential appointment could make him the first North Korean diplomat-turned-defector to reach a vice-ministerial post in South Korea's history. The secretary-general oversees the administrative affairs of the council, which advises on South Korea's unification policies and promotes engagement in reunification efforts. President Yoon Suk Yeol chairs the council as stipulated in the Constitution. Tae, who defected to South Korea in 2016 after serving as North Korea's deputy ambassador to the United Kingdom, has a background in national security strategy and is also a published author. He previously served as an adviser at the Institute for National Security Strategy and was elected as a lawmaker in 2020. The potential appointment of Tae comes amid speculations of a vice-minister-level reshuffle in the South Korean government, with reports suggesting that President Yoon might make changes before the end of the week. Additionally, there are indications of a new head for the Korean National Police Agency, with Jo Ji-ho being considered as the nominee.
