IOC apologizes for 'mistake' during Olympics opening ceremony

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued an apology to South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, the government, and the country's athletes after an error occurred during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics. The mistake involved the South Korean delegation being mistakenly identified as representing North Korea, with which South Korea is still technically at war. IOC President Thomas Bach personally apologized for the error in an official letter sent to South Korea's Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the president of the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee, and the chief of mission of the Korean delegation. Additionally, Bach apologized to President Yoon over a phone call, describing the incident as "inexcusable." The IOC acknowledged that the error was a result of human error and expressed deep regret over the incident. Bach assured President Yoon that the IOC would take all necessary measures to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. South Korea's Sports Ministry and Foreign Ministry also expressed regret over the incident, and President Yoon called for a public apology from the IOC via traditional and social media channels. The IOC confirmed that it is working with its partners to ensure that similar incidents do not happen during the Olympic Games, where 143 South Korean athletes are participating.
