K-pop boy bands losing allure as career choice

Rookie K-pop boy band One Pact recently showcased their debut album "Moment" in Seoul on Nov. 30, 2023. In the past, becoming a K-pop star was a popular dream for young people in Korea, but now, while many girls still aspire to this dream, boys are increasingly turning away from it due to the harsh realities of the industry. Trainees undergo rigorous training for three to five years and must compete fiercely for a slim chance to debut. Even if they achieve stardom, they often sacrifice their personal lives in the process. K-pop agencies are reporting difficulties in finding male trainees, as many young men now prefer to pursue careers as influencers or YouTubers, which offer potentially greater profit and more freedom. The decline in the number of male trainees is attributed to the lack of sustainability for boy bands, particularly due to the mandatory military service that male idols must fulfill. This factor, along with the absence of new successful boy bands that young male trainees can look up to, has led to a decrease in the number of male trainees at K-pop agencies. Music critic Kim Do-heon emphasized the need for entertainment companies to offer better working environments for trainees, regardless of gender, in order to address the issue and ensure the future sustainability of the K-pop industry.
