Katseye, Hybe’s first multinational K-pop girl group, off to disappointing start

Hybe's highly anticipated multinational K-pop girl group, Katseye, has been facing challenges in gaining recognition both in its target market of the US and in Korea, the birthplace of K-pop. The group, consisting of six members with only one being Korean, has raised doubts about the potential success of a predominantly non-Korean K-pop band. This skepticism is supported by the group's absence from Spotify and iTunes music charts, as well as its failure to make an impact on major Korean music charts like Melon's Top 100 and Hanteo Chart. Additionally, the group's debut music video for "Debut" has only garnered 2.33 million views on YouTube in three days, significantly lower than other recent K-pop releases. Despite the involvement of renowned musicians and producers such as Ryan Tedder, Grant Boutin, Tyler Spry, and Omer Fedi, Katseye has yet to meet the expectations set by Hybe and Geffen Records. Music critic Lim Hee-yun expressed concerns about the group's potential for success, highlighting the risks involved. However, there is still hope that a successful multinational K-pop group could pave the way for future endeavors in the industry.
