Main opposition threatens impeachment of new broadcasting regulator head

President Yoon Suk Yeol has officially appointed Lee Jin-sook, a former journalist of Munhwa Broadcasting Corp., as the new chief of Korea's top broadcasting regulator, the Korea Communications Commission (KCC). Lee immediately assumed her role on Wednesday, where she vowed to expedite the establishment of a board for public broadcasters. The KCC's plan to appoint new board members for the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, a major shareholder of MBC, is facing strong opposition from the political sphere, leading to the possibility of an impeachment motion against Lee. Despite facing accusations during a three-day parliamentary confirmation hearing, Lee's appointment signals a significant move by the Yoon administration to shake up the FBC boardroom. This shakeup is due to the imminent end of the current board members' terms and reflects the government's desire to influence the influential foundation, which has been critical of President Yoon. Lee, recognized as the nation's "first female war correspondent," brings extensive experience in journalism and expertise in Middle Eastern affairs to her new role as KCC chief.
