National Assembly launches forum for potential nuclear armament

The Mugunghwa Forum, a National Assembly platform discussing the potential of arming South Korea with nuclear weapons, was launched on Tuesday. The forum's founding president, ruling People Power Party Rep. Yu Yong-weon, expressed his satisfaction with the forum's establishment and emphasized its role in formulating strategies and building consensus for securing South Korea's nuclear potential. He highlighted the need to address the growing nuclear threats from North Korea and advocated for lifting limitations on uranium enrichment and spent fuel reprocessing as a realistic alternative to nuclear armament. The inaugural ceremony, held under the theme of "Preventing a North Korean nuclear catastrophe: Why South Korea can no longer put off securing a nuclear potential," was attended by ruling party leaders who pledged their full support to translate the forum's suggestions and ideas into policies. The forum includes 21 lawmakers, such as Rep. Na Kyung-won, Rep. Ahn Cheol-soo, Rep. Sung Il-jong, Rep. Kim Gunn, and Rep. Lee Jun-seok, reflecting a diverse representation of political figures. The Mugunghwa Forum, led by Rep. Yu Yong-weon, aims to address the pressing security concerns and explore the possibility of South Korea acquiring nuclear weapons in response to the evolving public opinion and the shifting dynamics of national defense capabilities.
