New special counsel bill zeroes in on both Yoon, first lady

President Yoon Suk Yeol and first lady Kim Keon Hee returned from a trip to Hawaii and Washington, disembarking from Air Force One at Seoul Air Base in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province on July 10. Lawmakers from the Rebuilding Korea Party proposed a bill to launch a special counsel probe into both President Yoon and first lady Kim. This move follows disputes and internal strife within the prosecution regarding the decision to interrogate Kim outside of its office, which has been criticized as preferential treatment for the president's wife. The bill focuses on allegations against Yoon during his tenure as South Korea's prosecutor general, including obstruction of official duty, abuse of power, and involvement in a high-profile land corruption scandal. It also addresses allegations against Kim, such as alleged antigraft violations and involvement in illegal stock price manipulation. The proposal for a special counsel probe has sparked controversy, with debate over the appropriateness of subjecting the first lady to questioning in a normal setting and concerns about the political neutrality of the prosecution. Meanwhile, a parliamentary hearing is underway regarding an online petition calling for the impeachment of President Yoon, and the Supreme Prosecutors' Office has stated that Prosecutor General Lee has rejected a request to appear at the hearing, citing concerns about undermining the prosecution's political neutrality.
