Opposition blasts president's alleged comment Itaewon crowd crush was 'induced'

Members of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea have continued to criticize President Yoon Suk Yeol over a claim made in a recently published memoir by a high-level politician. The memoir alleges that Yoon had expressed a suspicion that the deadly Itaewon crowd crush in December 2022 may have been induced and manipulated by a certain force. The opposition lawmakers, including Rep. Park Hong-geun, have demanded an explanation from the president, expressing concern that Yoon may have believed in conspiracy theories without proper verification. Former National Assembly Speaker Kim Jin-pyo released the alleged comment by Yoon about the tragedy, leading to a denial from the presidential office and the ruling People Power Party. Despite this, opposition lawmakers and minor parties have continued to request an official explanation from Yoon, with some members of the conservative bloc also urging an investigation into the situation. The controversy has sparked criticism from various political figures, with concerns raised about the president's alleged belief in conspiracy theories and the need for clarification from Yoon himself.
