Parliament confirms appointment of new police chief

Cho Ji-ho, the nominee for the new head of the National Police Agency, was sworn in during his confirmation hearing at the National Assembly in Seoul on Monday. The National Assembly officially confirmed Cho Ji-ho's appointment as the new police chief on Tuesday. The parliamentary committee on public administration and security approved a confirmation hearing report on Cho's nomination as the commissioner-general of the Korean National Police Agency after conducting a hearing the previous day. The adoption of the report is considered as parliamentary consent to the appointment, as the National Assembly does not have the authority to reject the nomination, and the president can proceed with the appointment regardless of the confirmation hearing's outcome. Cho will be taking over from Yoon Hee-keun. Born in 1968 in the southeastern county of Cheongsong, Cho graduated from the Korean National Police University. He previously served on President Yoon Suk Yeol's presidential transition team in early 2022 before being appointed as deputy commissioner general of the KNPA in December 2022 and as chief of the Seoul police agency in January of this year.
