Parliamentary committee passes pro-labor 'yellow envelope bill'

Lawmakers from the parliamentary environment and labor committee convened on Thursday to discuss a labor-related bill. The committee, comprised of members from the main opposition Democratic Party and other progressive parties, unilaterally passed a revision to the Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act, also known as the yellow envelope bill. This bill aims to restrict companies from seeking damages in legal disputes related to labor unions. The ruling People Power Party protested the passing of the bill by leaving the meeting, highlighting the contentious nature of the legislation. This bill has a history dating back to 2009 when SsangYong Motor Co. workers staged a strike, leading to a legal dispute that sparked public support in the form of yellow envelope donations. The bill has faced opposition from business lobbies and the ruling party, and was previously vetoed by President Yoon Suk Yeol following its initial passage by the National Assembly in response to the strong opposition.
