People Power Party leader candidates diverge on Trump

As South Korea's ruling People Power Party prepares for its national convention on Tuesday, the leading contender for the party's top position, Han Dong-hoon, made a last-minute effort to appeal to his base by expressing his views on former US President Donald Trump. In a Facebook post on Sunday, Han emphasized the significance of the South Korea-US alliance in various aspects such as diplomacy, defense, economy, and peace in Asia. He also highlighted his administration's commitment to safeguarding national interests through the strengthened alliance. Han's social media post was in response to a shoutout from Elbridge Colby, a Trump ally, who shared a YouTube clip of Han's remarks about Trump and his policies during the previous party convention debate. Colby praised Han's stance as aligning with an "America First, Asia priority US foreign policy." Despite criticism from some party members, including Rep. Na Kyung-won, who raised concerns about a potential second Trump term weakening US protection of South Korea, Han has maintained a consistent lead over his rivals in the party leadership race.
