Political blame game intensifies in Seoul over Sue Mi Terry row

The recent indictment of Sue Mi Terry, a former CIA North Korea expert, in the US has sparked a political dispute in South Korea between the ruling bloc and opposition regarding the responsibility for what is seen as a spying mistake. A liberal South Korean lawmaker criticized President Yoon Suk Yeol's office for causing internal division within the National Intelligence Service. The lawmaker expressed concerns about the potential negative impact of the presidential office's audit of the spy agency and urged them to avoid worsening the situation. Additionally, another Democratic Party lawmaker highlighted that a significant portion of Terry's alleged activities took place during the Yoon administration, countering the blame placed on the previous Moon administration. The controversy stems from Terry's charges of acting as an unregistered agent for South Korea and disclosing nonpublic US government information to South Korean intelligence officers in exchange for bribes. The situation has led to calls for Seoul to assess the repercussions of the indictment and focus on addressing the issue rather than exacerbating tensions between different administrations.
