Prominent N. Korean defector likely to be named head of unification council


Rep. Tae Yong-ho from the People Power Party has announced his intention to run for office in the Guro district in Seoul. Additionally, it is anticipated that Tae Yong-ho, a prominent North Korean defector and former deputy ambassador to Britain, will be appointed as the new head of the presidential advisory council on unification. The nomination for the position of secretary general for the Peaceful Unification Advisory Council has been completed, pending confirmation from President Yoon Suk Yeol. If confirmed, Tae will become the first North Korean defector to hold a deputy ministerial post since the council's establishment in 1980. Tae, who defected to South Korea in 2016, previously served as a lawmaker for the ruling People Power Party in the Gangnam district of Seoul, but was unsuccessful in securing a second term in the April parliamentary elections.
