Rival parties lock horns over Marine's death at committee meeting

On Monday, rival political parties clashed over a proposed bill that would require a special counsel investigation into the military's handling of a Marine's death last year. The parliamentary House Steering Committee held a plenary meeting to question top officials, including the presidential chief of staff and the Principal Deputy National Security Adviser, about the Marine's death. Lawmakers from the main opposition Democratic Party accused the presidential office of exerting external influence on the investigation and attempting to destroy evidence, while calling for the special probe bill to be passed. The bill in question seeks a special counsel to investigate allegations of inappropriate interference by the presidential office and the defense ministry in the Marine's death investigation. The ruling People Power Party emphasized the need to await the results of an ongoing probe by the police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials. Additionally, the meeting addressed a luxury bag scandal involving the first lady, with an official stating that the bag is believed to be kept in its package at the presidential office.
