Rival parties wrangle over Yoon's impeachment petition at parliamentary hearing

The ruling and main opposition parties clashed during a parliamentary committee hearing addressing an online petition for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol. The hearing focused on allegations of Yoon's interference in a probe into the death of a young Marine named Chae, and was marked by physical scuffles and yelling as the ruling People Power Party (PPP) staged a rally outside the meeting room. The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) complained of sustaining minor injuries and blamed PPP members for using force to prevent their attendance at the hearing. The hearing coincided with the first death anniversary of Chae, who was killed during a search mission for victims of heavy downpours. The National Legislation and Judiciary Committee reviewed the petition urging the National Assembly to propose a bill to impeach Yoon, citing reasons including his alleged influence on the military's investigation into the Marine's death and allegations against the first lady. The rival parties have been at odds over the Marine's death case for months, and the committee will decide whether to propose an impeachment motion in a plenary session, which would then be ruled on by the Constitutional Court if it receives a two-thirds vote in the 300-member parliament. Yoon, who took office in May 2022, is serving a single five-year term.
