During an emergency committee meeting at the National Assembly in Seoul, Choo Kyung-ho, the floor leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), publicly urged President Yoon Suk Yeol to veto a bill requiring a special counsel investigation into the military's handling of a Marine's death. He emphasized that the PPP cannot accept what they view as an "unconstitutional" bill that was pushed through by the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) without bipartisan agreement. Choo stated that the president should exercise his veto rights on the bill, which the PPP believes is riddled with constitutional violations. Choo also cautioned that if the DP proceeds to pass any contentious bills without agreement from the ruling party, the PPP will have no option but to request the president's intervention through his veto rights. The bill, approved by the National Assembly last week, aims to appoint a special counsel to probe allegations of interference in the Marine Corps' internal investigation into the circumstances of Cpl. Chae Su-geun's death during a search mission for victims of a 2023 downpour. This move comes after a similar bill was annulled in the previous Assembly due to a veto by President Yoon.
