Ruling party set to hold national convention to pick new leader

The ruling People Power Party was scheduled to hold a national convention on Tuesday to select a new party leader following the party's significant loss in the April parliamentary elections. The convention, coming three months after the former interim leader's resignation, sees Han Dong-hoon as the frontrunner in the race for the new PPP chief, with Rep. Na Kyung-won and two other contenders also vying for the position. There is anticipation around whether Han will secure a majority in the initial vote to avoid a runoff. The election will end a seven-month leadership vacuum in the party, which has been led by an emergency committee since August 2022. The tension between Han and President Yoon Suk Yeol's office, stemming from various politically sensitive issues, has been a focal point leading up to the election. Han has pledged to "reestablish" the PPP's relations with the government in a more "horizontal" manner, aiming to enable the party to voice reasonable criticism of the government's policies and decisions. The PPP's decision to include public opinion polls in the election process reflects efforts to better align with public sentiment after the party's defeat in April. The winner of the election is expected to be announced around 4:40 p.m., with a runoff scheduled for July 28 if no candidate secures a majority.
