Seoul touts Czech nuclear plant deal as Yoon's diplomatic feat

South Korea's President Yoon Suk Yeol played a pivotal role in securing a $17.4 billion nuclear power plant deal in the Czech Republic, as reported by local sources. President Yoon, known as "Korea Inc.'s No. 1 salesman," actively engaged in diplomatic efforts, meeting with Czech President Petr Pavel and sending a personal letter to Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala. These efforts culminated in the Czech Republic selecting a South Korean consortium, led by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, as the preferred bidder for the construction of up to four nuclear units in Dukovany and Temelin. Under President Yoon's leadership, South Korea has shifted away from the previous administration's nuclear phaseout policy, with nuclear power's share in the country's energy mix rebounding to the low 30-percent range. The South Korean consortium's competitive pricing and the country's successful track record in nuclear exports were cited as key factors in securing the Czech deal. Despite a legal dispute between US-based nuclear technology supplier Westinghouse and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, the Czech Republic expressed confidence in South Korea's amicable relationship with the United States, indicating that the dispute would not affect the contract signing planned for March 2025.
