Shakatak says it has hired musicologist to analyze NewJeans’ ‘Bubble Gum’ for plagiarism

The dispute over alleged plagiarism between K-pop girl group NewJeans and British band Shakatak seems likely to be prolonged. Shakatak recently announced on social platform X that they have hired a musicologist to examine the similarities between their 1981 song "Easier Said Than Done" and NewJeans' recent hit "Bubble Gum." This move was in response to a request from Ador, NewJeans' agency, for a credible report supporting the plagiarism allegation made by Wise Music Group, Shakatak's publishing company. Ador had previously denied the allegations and requested a credible report from Wise Music Group, which Shakatak has now agreed to provide. The London-based company that holds the copyright to "Easier Said Than Done" sent a certified letter to Ador, claiming that "Bubble Gum" utilized rhythms, melodies, and tempos identical to those of the British song. However, NewJeans' legal team has denied these allegations and requested a credible report from Wise Music Group to substantiate the claims. "Bubble Gum," released on May 24, was co-composed by Korean music producer 250, British music producer Oscar Bell, and American music producer Sophie Simmons.
