SK hynix reports highest profit in 6 years on robust AI chip sales

SK hynix Inc. announced its strongest quarterly profit in six years, driven by robust sales of its high-end memory chips used in artificial intelligence (AI) computing. The company reported an operating profit of 5.46 trillion won ($3.95 billion) for the April-June period, a significant turnaround from the loss of 2.88 trillion won a year earlier. This marked SK hynix's largest quarterly operating profit since the third quarter of 2018. The company's revenue surged 124.8 percent to a record 16.42 trillion won, with a net profit of 4.12 trillion won, a substantial improvement from a loss of 2.98 trillion won in the previous year. The remarkable earnings exceeded market expectations, with SK hynix attributing its strong performance to the demand for AI memory chips and a rebound in NAND flash memory prices. The company highlighted the continuous rise in overall prices of memory products and strong demand for AI memories as key drivers of its revenue growth. Additionally, SK hynix expressed optimism for the future, anticipating a rise in demand for AI server memory and high-performance memory products in the second half of the year. Moreover, the company's plans to mass-produce 12-layer HBM3E products and launch new memory products demonstrate its commitment to maintaining a competitive edge in the market. Furthermore, SK hynix is expanding its production capacity to meet the growing demand for AI memory chips, with new facilities scheduled to start mass production in the near future.
