Violence mars ruling party’s leadership race

The leadership race of the ruling conservative party has been marred by violence, with clashes between supporters of different candidates occurring during a joint campaign speech event earlier this week. At the event in Cheonan, videos showed apparent supporters of former People Power Party interim leader Han Dong-hoon and ex-Land Minister Won Hee-ryong engaging in a physical altercation. A YouTuber, seemingly supporting Won, disrupted Han's speech and a brawl ensued when apparent supporters of Han tried to confront the YouTuber. The ruling party's election management committee has requested a police investigation into the YouTubers involved in the altercation and banned the instigating YouTuber from attending future campaign events. This incident comes amidst ongoing concerns of intense mudslinging and slander between Han and Won, despite warnings from the election committee to cease personal attacks. Tensions have also risen within the conservative bloc due to rumors that Han ignored messages from the first lady ahead of the April 10 general election, where he was leading the ruling party. Additionally, there are observations that Han, a former prosecutor, has distanced himself from the current president, while Won is known to be a close aide of another party figure, Yoon Suk Yeol. These dynamics have further complicated the leadership race and intensified the rivalry between the candidates and their supporters.
