What are DMZ loudspeaker broadcasts for?

South Korea has resumed broadcasting loudspeaker messages along its border with North Korea as a retaliation to North Korea's recent act of sending balloons filled with trash southward. The South Korean military confirmed the commencement of "full-scale" broadcasting on Sunday afternoon, following North Korea's release of hundreds of balloons towards the South, with about 240 of them landing in South Korean territory. The use of loudspeaker broadcasts in the ongoing information warfare between the two Koreas is not a new tactic, dating back to the 1950-53 Korean War. This method, along with dropping propaganda leaflets, has been utilized by both sides. The decision to restart the broadcasts is seen as an "asymmetric capability" by the conservative Yoon administration, supported by high-profile North Korean defectors, but some experts question its effectiveness due to limited reach within North Korea. They emphasize the need for concurrent diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions in the region and warn about the potential for triggering border skirmishes.
