Yoon approves resignation of broadcasting watchdog chief ahead of impeachment vote

Korea Communications Commission Chairman Kim Hong-il voluntarily stepped down from his position just hours before the National Assembly was set to hold a plenary session to vote on his impeachment. President Yoon Suk Yeol accepted Kim's resignation, allowing for a successor to take over the duties to avoid suspension of the position due to impeachment. The resignation was prompted by accusations from the main opposition Democratic Party, who accused Kim of unfairly running the broadcasting watchdog with several vacant positions, leading to a push for impeachment. The Democratic Party, which holds a controlling majority in the National Assembly, was expected to pass the impeachment motion, which would have immediately suspended Kim's duties until the Constitutional Court made a decision. The Korea Communications Commission plays a significant role in decisions regarding broadcasting stations and the appointment of key positions, such as the president of MBC TV. Kim's resignation follows the pattern of his predecessor, who also stepped down shortly before facing an impeachment vote.
