Yoon likely to name new police chief, promote his secretaries soon

President Yoon Suk Yeol is reportedly set to announce several key appointments and nominations in South Korea's government later this week. One of the anticipated changes is the appointment of Jo Ji-ho, the current head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, as the new chief of the Korean National Police Agency. Alongside this, Kim Seong-seop is expected to be named as the new vice minister for small and medium-sized enterprises, while Park Sung-taek is slated to be nominated as the first vice minister of the Industry Ministry. Additionally, there is speculation regarding whether President Yoon will replace some ministers who have been in their roles for over two years since he took office in May 2022. Specifically, there are discussions about potentially replacing the labor minister and the science minister. It is emphasized that these nominations and appointments are not intended to sway public opinion in favor of President Yoon, according to an anonymous official from the presidential office. Given the opposition's dominance in the National Assembly following the ruling bloc's electoral loss in April, President Yoon has been primarily focusing on nominations for vice-minister-level positions, as ministerial nominations require parliamentary hearings. Furthermore, attention is also drawn to the possibility of nominating a female candidate for the role of a senior presidential secretary dedicated to addressing South Korea's population crisis.
