Yoon taps economics expert as population planning aide

President Yoon Suk Yeol's administration has created a new senior presidential secretary role to focus on addressing South Korea's population crisis. The appointee, You Hye-mi, an economics professor at Hanyang University, will be responsible for tackling the country's low birth rate and demographic challenges. This position is described as a "control tower" for population-related policymaking, and there are plans to revise a law to establish a new deputy prime minister for population planning in the Cabinet. You, who holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Rochester, has previous experience as an economics professor and will work closely with various ministries to address the wide-ranging impact of demographic changes on economic growth, fiscal health, employment, education, and welfare. In addition to You, two other individuals have been appointed as presidential secretaries: Choi Han-kyeung from the Finance Ministry and Choi Jong-kyun from the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency. They will be responsible for budget planning and work-family balance policymaking, respectively. These three appointees are set to commence their roles at the presidential office the following day. Furthermore, the administration has also selected Lee Sang-deok, South Korea's ambassador to Indonesia, to lead the Overseas Koreans Agency, succeeding Lee Key-cheol.
