Yoon urges Russia to make 'sensible' decision over Koreas

President Yoon Suk Yeol is set to discuss military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, which the West believes is exacerbating the conflict in Ukraine, as he embarks on a five-day trip to the United States. During his visit, he will address the US Indo-Pacific Command and attend the North American Treaty Organization Summit. Yoon emphasized that South Korea's decision on providing weapons to Ukraine will depend on the nature of military cooperation between Russia and North Korea, and he stated that the future of South Korea's relations with Russia hinges entirely on Russia's actions. He also urged Russia to make a "sensible" choice between South Korea and North Korea based on its national interest. Yoon's trip aims to enhance South Korea's national security through increased international cooperation, given the growing interconnectedness of Seoul's security concerns with the global community. The presidential office highlighted the importance of integrated extended deterrence between South Korea and the United States in addressing the nuclear missile threat from North Korea. Additionally, Yoon revealed South Korea's readiness to host a high-level cyber defense exercise for NATO member states in September. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the significance of the partnership between NATO and South Korea, especially in light of the interconnected security challenges faced by both regions. Yoon's itinerary includes visits to the US Indo-Pacific Command in Honolulu and bilateral talks with several NATO members in Washington, as well as participation in meetings with NATO and Indo-Pacific 4 partners. He is also scheduled to deliver a speech at the NATO Public Forum.
