Asiana Airlines Pilots Union calls for Europe to assess Air Incheon's cargo division suitability

The Asiana Airlines' Pilots Union has urged the European Commission to investigate Air Incheon's suitability as a potential buyer of Asiana Airlines' cargo business. This request comes after Korean Air selected Air Incheon as the preferred bidder for the sale of Asiana Airlines' global cargo freighter business. The union expressed concerns about Air Incheon's qualifications and ability to effectively manage the acquisition, particularly given the relatively young age of Asiana Airlines' cargo fleet and the potential challenges a smaller cargo airline may face in handling the business. They also proposed that Air Incheon consider hiring cargo pilots on a temporary contract basis rather than through direct succession, should the merger be approved. In response to the union's concerns, the European Commission stated that it cannot intervene in employment matters between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines employees, as the sale of Asiana Airlines' cargo business includes existing labor agreements with pilots. However, the Commission assured the union that it would carefully review the concerns and remain open to receiving additional information on the matter. Meanwhile, Korean Air and Air Incheon are set to sign the master agreement for the sale of Asiana's cargo arm, following the completion of their contract negotiations.
