BTS fans divided over Suga's drunk driving

BTS's fanbase, known as Army, is deeply divided over Suga's recent drunk driving incident. Some fans express disappointment and even call for his departure from the band, while others argue that the criticism is excessive and that Suga should be given privacy to deal with the situation. Suga's blood alcohol concentration of 0.227 percent was one of the highest recorded levels among K-pop singers, leading to deep disappointment among some fans. Some fans even sent protest wreaths to Hybe's headquarters in Seoul, demanding Suga's departure from the band, although this was not an organized effort by the entire fandom. International fans have expressed concern for Suga's well-being and have urged that he be given space to avoid excessive stress. They are worried about his mental and emotional health, especially in light of his past struggles with mental health. However, music critic Lim Hee-yun pointed out that the high expectations placed on K-pop artists by local fans are deeply rooted in the K-pop culture, and that the public reaction is intense due to the unique context of drunk driving in South Korea, especially when it involves prominent figures like BTS. This is further emphasized by the Yoon Chang-ho Act, which was enacted following a tragic incident in 2018, reflecting the seriousness with which drunk driving is taken in South Korea.
