Cabinet asks Yoon to veto controversial cash handout bill

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo presided over a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, during which the Cabinet voted to urge President Yoon Suk Yeol to veto a bill proposed by the Democratic Party of Korea. This bill aimed to provide economic relief to every South Korean by distributing 250,000 to 350,000 won ($182 to $255) to each individual. The Prime Minister expressed concern that the bill, which was passed by the Assembly without bipartisan support, could strain the government budget and contribute to inflation. He criticized the unilateral passing of the bill by the opposition and emphasized the lack of public consensus. In addition to the economic relief bill, the Cabinet also requested the President to reject another controversial bill related to labor rights. This bill sought to grant legal protection to contract workers in labor disputes, a move that had previously been vetoed by the President in December but was passed by the Assembly again this month. The Cabinet's actions reflect a growing tension between the ruling and opposition parties, with concerns raised about the representation of national interests in the Assembly.
