Ex-DP leader Lee set to win second term as party leader at national convention

Former Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung is expected to win a second term as the party's chief, with the national convention set to take place on Sunday. Lee has maintained a significant lead over other candidates, securing nearly 90 percent of the combined ballots in 17 rounds of primaries. In addition to the party chief, five other members of the top leadership council will also be elected at the convention. Despite facing criticism and scandals, Lee is likely to secure victory in the upcoming election, despite calls for new leadership within the party. Lee's resignation in June allowed him to run for reelection, as per the party's rules, and he is also considered a leading candidate for the liberal party in the next presidential election in 2027. Despite the controversies surrounding him, Lee's strong position within the party and his previous election as the DP chairman in 2022 indicate that he is likely to secure another term as the party's leader.
