Govt. demands parliamentary reconsideration of pro-labor, cash handout bills

During a Cabinet meeting in Seoul, the government called for the National Assembly to reconsider two controversial bills concerning workers' rights and cash handouts for the population. The Cabinet approved a motion for parliamentary reconsideration, which is expected to be endorsed by President Yoon Suk Yeol. One of the bills, known as the "yellow envelope bill," aims to restrict companies from making claims against workers during legitimate disputes, while the other bill proposes providing cash handouts of 250,000 to 350,000 won to the entire population. Both bills were previously passed by the opposition-controlled National Assembly. In addition, President Yoon vetoed four bills led by the opposition aimed at altering the governance structure of public broadcasters. The main opposition Democratic Party criticized Yoon for what they perceive as an excessive use of his veto power, with Rep. Park Chan-dae describing it as "an addiction to veto" and highlighting that Yoon has vetoed legislation for the 19th time, the highest since democratization.
