HD Hyundai Oilbank ramps up R&D efforts for green growth

HD Hyundai Oilbank, a leading refinery company in South Korea, is intensifying its research and development endeavors to drive growth as a sustainable energy enterprise. Leveraging its expertise in refinery and petrochemical operations, the company is strategically pivoting towards advancing new growth areas such as eco-friendly chemicals, materials, and energy infrastructure. In 2011, HD Hyundai Oilbank established a central technology institute to consolidate its R&D teams nationwide, focusing on hydrogen energy, white biotechnology, and carbon capture and utilization. The institute, now directly overseen by the company's CEO, has specialized study groups dedicated to tasks like Hydrogen Energy, Green Materials, and Refinery Technology. The company has significantly increased its R&D investment in eco-friendly energy, doubling spending from 9.5 billion won in 2021 to 21.4 billion won in 2023. This heightened focus has resulted in a notable surge in related patents, increasing from two to 26 during the same period. Additionally, HD Hyundai Oilbank has achieved international certification for its products utilizing waste plastic pyrolysis oil, marking a significant milestone as the nation's first refiner to do so. Furthermore, the company is actively developing new recycling technology for waste lubricating oil to contribute to the establishment of a circular economy.
