Justice ministry to review pardon beneficiaries, including ex-governor, ex-presidential secretary

President Yoon Suk Yeol delivered a speech at Ewha Womans University in Seoul on the 78th Liberation Day, August 15, 2023. The justice ministry was set to review potential recipients of special presidential pardons to be granted on the upcoming Liberation Day, with a focus on individuals convicted of livelihood-related crimes. Among those being considered for pardons are former South Gyeongsang governor Kim Kyoung-soo and former presidential secretary Cho Yoon-sun, both of whom have served prison terms and may have their full rights reinstated if granted pardons. The justice ministry's eight-member pardon review committee, including Minister Park Sung-jae and five external members, was scheduled to convene to assess the qualifications of potential pardon beneficiaries. Once the review is completed, the justice minister will present a list of candidates to the president for final approval with Cabinet endorsement. This marks the fifth round of special pardons under President Yoon Suk Yeol's administration, with a focus on commemorating the national holiday of August 15.
