K-pop stars’ military favoritism controversy returns amid Suga's DUI incident

Suga of BTS recently attended the Galaxy Unpacked 2023 event in Seoul, but controversy has arisen following his drunk driving incident while serving as a public service agent, leading to renewed scrutiny over preferential treatment for K-pop stars during their mandatory military service. The Military Manpower Administration (MMA) has responded by promising to enhance education and supervision for social service agents, amidst skepticism due to past incidents involving celebrities fulfilling their military terms. The issue has also raised concerns about K-pop stars resorting to various means to avoid active military duty, with Suga's classification from active soldier to public service worker prompting frustration and skepticism among netizens. The MMA has denied favoritism towards celebrities, stating that military exemption and placement as a social service worker are determined based on physical examination results and individual aptitudes. However, past statistics and incidents have fueled doubt about the fairness of the process.
