Lee Jae-myung reelected as leader of main opposition party

Democratic Party of Korea Rep. Lee Jae-myung was reelected as the leader of the country's main opposition party on Sunday, further solidifying his influence in the National Assembly. Lee, who previously served as Democratic Party chair from August 2022 to June 2026, secured 85.4 percent of the votes from party members, ensuring his second term as party leader. His victory at the convention held at the KSPO Dome in Seoul was widely anticipated, as he had consistently received strong support from party members during the primaries. In addition to Lee's reelection, several other members were elected to the party's new five-member Supreme Council. Lee's victory comes at a time of legislative gridlock, with the Democratic Party facing challenges in passing bills due to President Yoon Suk Yeol's repeated vetoes. Furthermore, Lee is currently involved in multiple legal cases, including charges of bribery and violations of various acts. Despite these challenges, Lee is seen as a prominent figure in the liberal bloc and a strong potential candidate for the next presidential election in 2027, setting the stage for a potentially intense competition with current People Power Party Chair Han Dong-hoon.
