NCSoft, a prominent South Korean game developer, reported a 75 percent decline in operating profit for the April-June period, dropping to 8.8 billion won ($6.4 million) from 35.3 billion won a year earlier. Sales also decreased by 16.2 percent year-on-year to 368.9 billion won. Despite this, the company's net profit surged 132.8 percent year-on-year to 71.1 billion won, largely attributed to favorable currency exchange rates. NCSoft's ability to achieve an operating profit was attributed to cost-cutting measures, including layoffs and organizational restructuring. In terms of sales performance, NCSoft experienced a 27 percent decline in mobile game sales and a 2 percent decrease in revenue from PC games. The company's chief financial officer, Hong Won-jun, indicated plans for global service of its latest massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) title, Throne and Liberty, in September, as well as the release of a new role-playing game title, Hoyeon, in South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan in August. Looking ahead, NCSoft is developing new titles for release next year and beyond, and is also working on diversifying its game lineup through acquisitions and investments in global game companies, including a recent $3.5 million seed investment in Swedish game developer Moon Rover Games.
