Opposition parties float impeachment motion against new KCC head

Opposition parties have put forward a parliamentary impeachment motion against Lee Jin-sook, the newly appointed head of the state broadcasting regulator, accusing her of making biased decisions with only two out of the five commissioners currently in office. This move by the main opposition Democratic Party and five other minor parties marks the fourth attempt in less than a year to propose an impeachment against the chair of the Korea Communications Commission. The opposition alleges that Lee breached the law by recommending board members nominated by the ruling party with only two of the total five KCC commissioners in office. They also accuse her of suppressing the labor union within public broadcaster MBC during her time as the president of MBC's Daejeon branch. If the impeachment motion is passed by the National Assembly, Lee would face a months-long suspension, leading to a leadership vacuum within the KCC. The decision-making process for the impeachment by the Constitutional Court typically takes around three to five months. This development comes after President Yoon Suk Yeol approved the state broadcasting regulator's earlier confirmation of new board members for public broadcaster KBS and the KCC's confirmation of new board members for a major shareholder of MBC. The KCC's decision to appoint new board members and an auditor for the Foundation for Broadcast Culture, a supervisory body and major shareholder of MBC, was also made in a closed-door meeting. The approval of the KBS board members by Yoon and the KCC's authority over the FBC board members will not be affected if the impeachment motion against Lee is successful. The standing committee of the KCC had remained vacant after two former commissioners resigned in July following pressure from liberal parties to impeach them and halt a boardroom nomination for the public broadcasters.
