Political tensions to rise as rival parties' leaders start new term

The upcoming first bilateral meeting between the newly elected leaders of rival parties has garnered significant national attention due to their potential candidacy for the 2027 presidential election. After Democratic Party of Korea Rep. Lee Jae-myung secured his second term with an overwhelming 85.4 percent of the party members' votes, he is set to meet with the recently elected ruling People Power Party Chair, Han Dong-hoon on August 25. This meeting is highly anticipated as both leaders are considered leading contenders for the next presidential race, and there are high expectations for the meeting to address the ongoing tensions between the rival parties. However, with varying perspectives on critical bills and policies, it is anticipated that the meeting may potentially amplify the existing tension within the Assembly. The meeting is expected to cover contentious bills previously passed by the opposition-led Assembly, including the proposal for providing cash handouts to the population. While Han expressed optimism for meaningful progress on livelihood-related issues from the meeting, he highlighted significant differences in the ruling party's approach to universal cash handouts. Meanwhile, Lee also extended a proposal for bilateral talks with President Yoon, indicating an intent to establish his position as a key figure in national affairs. As the two leaders prep for their meeting, a recent survey revealed that Lee ranks first as the preferred potential candidate for the 2027 presidential election, with Han following closely in second place.
