Ruling party policy chief steps down amid internal rift

People Power Party Rep. Jeong Jeom-sig, known for his affiliation with the pro-Yoon Suk Yeol faction within the party, unexpectedly announced his resignation as the party's policy chief during a press conference. He stated that his decision was made in order to prevent further division within the ruling party, and revealed that the party chair, Han Dong-hoon, had requested his resignation. Jeong emphasized that his decision was not impulsive and that he had received the request from the party chair the day before the press conference. Following Jeong's resignation, it is anticipated that Han will be able to strengthen his influence over the party's supreme council, as he has the authority to appoint a replacement for Jeong. Prior to this development, internal conflict had arisen between the pro-Yoon faction and supporters of Han, with a closed-door meeting between Yoon and Han further highlighting the political tensions within the party.
