Ruling party proposes Oct. 1 as temporary holiday

South Korea is considering making October 1 a temporary public holiday to commemorate the 76th anniversary of Armed Forces Day, following a request from the ruling People Power Party. If approved at a Cabinet meeting, workers will be entitled to take the day off, in addition to the existing public holiday on October 3 known as National Foundation Day. The proposal aims to recognize the dedication of those on active military duty and boost military morale, consumer spending, and corporate burden. The ruling bloc also discussed measures to alleviate the cost of living burden for ordinary people ahead of the Chuseok long weekend holiday in mid-September, including releasing food items from national reserves, exempting highway toll fees, and providing temporary discounts for train travel. Additionally, the government plans to impose mandatory requirements on electric car manufacturers to disclose battery-related information in response to public concerns about EV battery fire risks.
