SK hynix gives boost to chip exports to Taiwan

South Korea's chip exports to Taiwan have seen a significant increase, driven by the surge in shipments from SK hynix to Nvidia. Data from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and the Korea International Trade Association revealed that in the first half of this year, Korea's memory chip exports to Taiwan reached $4.26 billion, marking a 225.7 percent rise from the previous year. The overall memory chip exports from South Korea also grew by 88.7 percent during the same period. Industry insiders attribute this growth to SK hynix's enhanced exports of high bandwidth memory chips to Taiwan, where TSMC, a key partner of Nvidia, is based. Nvidia relies on TSMC for the production of its graphic processing units, with the Taiwanese company packaging the GPUs alongside HBM chips supplied by SK hynix and Micron Technology to create AI accelerators for Nvidia. At present, SK hynix is the sole Korean chipmaker providing HBM chips to Nvidia, while Samsung Electronics is in the process of conducting qualification tests to supply its fifth-generation HBM3E chips. This year, the annual memory chip exports from South Korea to Taiwan are projected to surpass a record $8 billion, exceeding the previous range of $1 billion to $4 billion. As a result, Taiwan has risen to become the nation's third-largest export market for memory chips in the first half of this year, surpassing Vietnam and the US.
