South Korea opens export of heat-treated chicken products to Britain

In a recent file photo, a group of international students were seen enjoying samgyetang in Seoul, South Korea. The government has announced its decision to open exports for heat-treated chicken products, such as frozen chicken, dumplings, and samgyetang, to the United Kingdom. This move comes after successfully negotiating an export sanitary and quarantine agreement for these products with the European Union in December of the previous year. The initiative is a significant step into the British market, further bolstered by the strategic partnership established during the South Korea-UK summit and ongoing efforts to enhance the Korea-UK Free Trade Agreement. Agriculture Minister Song Mi-ryung expressed confidence in the potential of "gastrodiplomacy" to thrive, particularly highlighting the successful export of samgyetang to the EU earlier this year. She emphasized plans to actively promote Korean foods, such as frozen chicken, chicken dumplings, and chicken ham, through both online and offline channels, aiming to expand their presence in distribution stores and attract new buyers. This export opportunity to Britain, as the second-largest economy in Europe, is seen as a promising avenue for South Korea to pursue.
