South Korean mobile carriers are hurrying to introduce call-recording services for iPhone users, possibly inspired by the success of market leader SK Telecom's A. service. LG Uplus, the country's smallest telecom company, plans to launch a call-recording service called "ixi O" in the second half of the year, following SK Telecom's A. service that debuted last year. "ixi O" will utilize LG Uplus's proprietary AI technology, Ixi-Gen, trained on communication data and based on LG Group's think tank LG AI Research Institute's large language model, Exaone. KT Corp., another telecom carrier, is also considering launching an AI call recording service, although details of specific release plans have not been disclosed. The AI call recording feature is gaining attention from mobile carriers and users due to its absence on iPhones, unlike Android smartphones which do offer this feature. SK Telecom's A. is an AI assistant that records phone calls and summarizes the content, currently used by about 4.6 million people. KT and LG Uplus have experienced declines in subscribers, potentially due to SK Telecom's introduction of the A. service. Furthermore, Apple is reportedly working on a call-recording feature through an iOS update, but it may have limited impact as the feature requires consent from the other party on the phone call to function.
